Postie and Union Official

I have been a Postie for 35 years and Secretary of the Postal Workers Union for 23 years. I intended to work as a Postie for about a year but found I enjoyed having my afternoons free to pursue other interests. Recognition of a need for advocacy for working people led to my involvement in the creation of a union for postal workers in 1994. Being a full-time Postie and a Union Secretary means I don't have so much time for "other interests" any more - except for music!

I first became involved with ASO when I was invited to try out by a (former) player whom I met in another orchestra. What I love most about the orchestra is the opportunity to rehearse a wide repertoire of music, to achieve a good standard in performance, and to feel part of a collaborative and supportive group in which all members share a common purpose. The world premier performance of Chris Artley's stunningly beautiful Missa Brevis is a standout memory for me. The ASO under MD Peter Thomas was joined by the Graduate Choir of NZ, the Holy Trinity Cathedral Choir, and organist Philip Smith to premier this work at Holy Trinity Cathedral Parnell in March 2018. Breathtaking.

I enjoy jogging in the evenings and long bicycle rides in the weekend. I also play, from time to time, in three chamber orchestras.
