As a registered charity, the Auckland Symphony Orchestra relies on the generosity of our patrons, grant funders and community partners to be able to continue performing high quality, free concerts for the people of Auckland. All of the musicians volunteer their time so all donations and funding support goes towards concert operating costs.
All donations over $5 are tax deductible.
The Auckland Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is one of New Zealand’s largest community- based orchestras and we have been providing free family concerts to the people of Auckland since 1975.
Players are drawn from all walks of life and from all parts of Auckland and beyond. We provide an opportunity for musicians who have chosen a career outside performance music to enjoy weekly rehearsals of symphonic music, playing without payment and purely for the pleasure of making great music together.
The ASO supports up-and-coming composers, conductors, and local soloists by giving them the opportunity to work and perform with a full symphony orchestra in concert in world-class concert venues.
The orchestra’s main philosophy is that music should be fun and enjoyed by players and audiences alike – hence our regular, free community concerts.
With over eighty musicians, the ASO has developed an excellent following and reputation for its high quality performances of popular orchestral classics, film and show music.
We are a registered charity and are run by a vibrant committee made up of musicians and partners, with a wide range of business and governance experience.
